Forest

Forest monitoring activities are focused on implementing comprehensive observations and researches directed to one of the most important natural resources for the Republic of Armenia, the protection and expansion of forest ecosystems. Presently, monitoring-studies are fulfilled in the sphere of supporting the process of sustainable forest management, such as:

  • state of forests and forest lands (including forests located within SPAs);
  • quantitative and qualitative changes taking place in thereof,
  • reforestation and afforestation,
  • forest use,
  • prevalence of diseases and pests in forests,
  • wildfires (including fire safety rules and related measures),
  • effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on forests and forest lands,
  • violations of forest legislation,
  • illegal cutting of trees,
  • Monitoring-studies of illegal transfer, sale and other negative actions of timber.

Analysis and assessment of timber consumption market in the Republic of Armenia are supervised, as well as activities directed to the study and evaluation of forest management projects and drafts aimed at the sectorial development.
Initial information based on up-to-date remote sensing data, computer-aided GIS software, satellite image decoding, section imaginary by using unmanned aerial vehicles, aerial photography, as well as comprehensive analysis are the grounds for further fieldworks and monitoring. The access of the obtained spatial data to geolocation technologies enables the rational implementation of field observations of the pre-identified problems, as well as to record the other problems revealed in the field conditions.

Some of the works realized  as a result of the cooperation of GIS and Remote Sensing technologies and field studies are presented:

RA forest cover as of 2011 and 2018

Identification of modified forest areas

Classification of the burnt area according to the burn severity

Section of burnt forest area by unmanned aerial vehicle

Mapping of forest sections infected with diseases and pests

Monitoring of pests and diseases

Detection of windfall sites

Revealing of illegal logging

The Forest Monitoring Service is also authorized to execute the type of "Research fulfillment via Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing technologies" enterpurnial activity.
